Upgrades caused some downtime

Sorry about the downtime today, we had to upgrade some software on the database server, and as part of that, we had to make some changes to the format that diary entries and everything are stored in. This took ages, because there are a looooottttt of entries. Super sorry for the downtime and inconvenience. Note: Diaries were still up and readable the whole time, people just could't add or edit entries.

server move

Exciting day! I was getting ready to move the site to a new server, when a disk on the old server had a big problem. Rather than fix it, I just pushed up the server move, and have just completed it.

I'll keep this short because I want to test this like crazy, but if you run into any problems, email my non-Diaryland email address to make sure it gets through, and I'll check it out. (that email addy is andrew, followed by the symbol @, followed by Castmate.fm)

Your diary as a library-quality trade paperback!

Huge news today! You can now get your diary printed as a high quality paperback. I am not sure what to write here that I didn't already cover on the actual page for this, so check it out here.

Guys, I have been working on setting up this service for months, and making sure it's high quality, these books look amazing, this is a great gift for a friend, or for yourself haha!

Also, please continue to use our Amazon links in the members area if you need to buy anything on Amazon, it really helps with server costs, which have been growing lately, ugh.

new signup procedure: invite-only

My month has not been going great to begin with and now this: Spammers have been getting so annoying that I've had to shut down the signup system to new users...

BUT BUT BUT BUT

that doesn't mean new people aren't welcome to the site. Right now you just need an invite to prove you are not a spammer. How do you get one? Click here to find out all the details. I'll write more soon!

It's pretty disappointing that it came to this but the spammers were just insane, and they were actually setting up new users manually so CAPTCHAs wouldn't do anything, ugh.

Email any thoughts and whatever! The address is help @ diaryland dot com.

Frustrating, but I have a feeling this may be the start of a renaissance for Diaryland, stay tuned.

downtime earlier today

Sorry for the downtime earlier today! We had some DNS trouble, but it is all solved now, and the site has been available for a few hours at least now for most people.

There are a small amount of people who still may not be able to access the site because their ISP hasn't updated with our new DNS info yet, but if that is affecting you or anyone you know, don't worry, it shouldn't last long at all!

Sorry again about this! First downtime in quite a long time that I recall, bah.

new button, thoughts on avoiding spammer signups

Just a note mentioning that there's a new donation button in the members area. No pressure, but feel free to donate if you want, the site could use it, it takes a lot to keep it running. Someone suggested this recently and it made sense, so it's added now!

I also want to add a widget soon showing how many spam site have been nuked in the past 24 hours or something, because it's silly how many are still being created.

I have actually considered doing something to stop them where you can only sign up for Diaryland if you get a special code from another user or something like that, or pay a token fee of $1 or something (since these are both things that spammers won't do, but legitimate users shouldn't have trouble with), but I don't know, anyone have thoughts on that? email help @ diaryland dot com if so!

Happy 2010 all!

spam system update

Quick update, after less than 24 hours, the new system for detecting spam diaries has been a huge success, and we've closed over 150 of them. Woo. I love the fact that someone spent a decent amount of time creating a ton of pages trying to sell counterfeit Ugg boots or whatever (seriously, SO many of these lately have been selling those things), and everytime someone reports them, I check them out, say "yup that's spam" and click 1 button and boom, all their work spamming is deleted in less than a second.

So keep reporting these guys, it's been going great, thanks to everyone who has reported one or more of these!

new anti spam diary system

Quick quick note: The spammer problem has been getting out of hand, so we have a new automated system. When you see a spam diary in the "recent public entries" list, just click the little star beside the username and it'll be submitted to us, we'll verify it's a spammer and remove it. I've been testing it a bunch tonight and the system is awesome, very fast and easy, only takes us a second to nuke a spam diary and ban the user, weeee. So check that out!

Happy thanksgiving Canada.

spam diaries part 2

Hello hello,

So as an addendum to the last news entry about the people who make fake diaries to advertise stuff, I have decided to send a DiaryLand t-shirt to whoever reports the most of these this month. If more than one person reports the same one at approximately the same time, I'll give each person credit. So keep those coming in and maybe you can get yourself a free shirt, as well as making it a lot less annoying to browse diaries.

Next up: I'm adding a discussion board/forum to the members area. I plan to do this very soon, send me your ideas on like general discussion categories and whatnot!

fake advertising diaries boo

No news for a while, sorry about that! So anyhow, lately there have been some people making fake diaries in order to use as spam advertising pages. If you run into one of these, please let us know right away and we'll shut them down.

If anyone who is adding these happens to read this, you might as well stop, we'll just be shutting them down immediately now, and since everyone is going to read this, they'll let us know right away (right guys?).

thanks, more news soon!

Andrew
